Does Business Central Copilot automate purchasing? What the built-in agents do and don't do
Last updated
Partly. Business Central's built-in agents work on sales orders, process vendor invoices and match them to purchase orders, and handle expenses. As of October 1, 2026, Microsoft's release plan and update 29.0 notes list no agent that decides what to reorder or drafts replenishment purchase orders; that still runs through the requisition and planning worksheets.
Everything below about Microsoft's agents comes from Microsoft's own release plan and "what's new" pages, read on 2026-10-01. Microsoft says release plans stopped being published in September 2026 and new features now appear on its AI at Work roadmap, so check there for anything newer.
Which agents does Business Central have today?
Microsoft's 2026 release wave 1 plan lists three task agents in Business Central, and none of them plans purchases. The Sales Order Agent works on sales orders, the Payables Agent works on incoming vendor invoices, and the Expense Agent works on employee expenses.
| Agent or feature | What it does for purchasing | Status per Microsoft (date) |
|---|---|---|
| Payables Agent: match purchase invoices to orders | Uses AI to match incoming vendor invoices to open purchase orders and receipts (3-way matching), even without a clear reference on the invoice | Generally available Feb 6, 2026 |
| Payables Agent: Known Senders | Speeds up processing of invoices from recognized senders | Generally available Aug 7, 2026 |
| Payables Agent: try without email setup | Lets you try the agent before connecting a mailbox | Generally available Jul 6, 2026 |
| Payables Agent: improved purchase order matching | Further improves invoice-to-order matching | Generally available in update 29.0 (2026 release wave 2) |
| Sales Order Agent: multiple agents per company | Works on sales orders, not purchases | Generally available Jul 8, 2026 |
| Expense Agent | Employee expenses, not inventory purchasing | Public preview from May 8, 2026 |
The verdict: the Payables Agent works on purchase orders after they exist, when the invoice arrives. Nothing in either list we read decides which items to buy, how many, or from whom.
What about Copilot chat and item insights?
Business Central also has Copilot features that help a buyer think, without placing orders. "Get item insights with advanced KPIs and summary" became generally available on April 1, 2026. "Enable unified Copilot chat experience consistent with Microsoft Copilot" was planned for public preview in September 2026, and update 29.0 lists the Microsoft Copilot chat experience as public preview.
These can summarize an item or answer questions about data. Microsoft does not describe them as producing a purchase plan, so treat them as research help rather than replenishment.
Can you connect your own AI to Business Central?
Yes. Microsoft has been building out a Business Central MCP server, the open protocol AI assistants use to call tools. "Create agentic experiences with enhanced MCP server" became generally available April 1, 2026, "Unlock more Business Central data with MCP server enhancements" on June 12, 2026, and update 29.0 adds "Run data queries with MCP Server".
That gives you the plumbing. The purchasing logic, meaning forecasting demand, applying lead times and safety stock, grouping by vendor and drafting the order, is still something you or a partner has to build, or a ready-made agent has to supply.
So how do you automate purchasing in Business Central today?
With Microsoft's tools alone, you automate purchasing by tuning planning parameters and running the requisition worksheet on a routine. The engine is reliable when every item has a reordering policy, a lead time and a reorder point or safety stock that matches current demand.
- Give every stocked item a reordering policy. Our guide on reordering policies explains which one.
- Set lead times on vendor cards and item vendor catalog entries, and a default safety lead time. See safety stock and lead time.
- Run Calculate Plan in the requisition worksheet on a fixed day each week, filtered by item or location.
- Review the action messages and carry out the accepted lines to create purchase orders.
- Route the purchase orders through your approval workflow, then let the Payables Agent match the invoices when they arrive.

Where does ReorderOwl fit next to Copilot?
ReorderOwl covers the step Microsoft's agents leave open: deciding what to order. It is a purchasing agent you use in ChatGPT. It reads sales history, stock on hand, open purchase orders, vendors and lead times from Business Central, forecasts each item, and tells you what to order and how much, with an Excel workbook that explains every line. It works alongside the Payables Agent rather than replacing it: ReorderOwl helps create the purchase order, and the Payables Agent can match the vendor's invoice to it later.
ReorderOwl drafts the purchase order and saves it in Business Central only after you confirm. Nothing goes to a vendor until someone on your team sends it. The connection is built and tested against Business Central test systems; we connect it to yours with you during setup. Frequently asked questions
Is there a purchase order agent in Business Central?
Not one that plans purchases. The Payables Agent matches vendor invoices to existing purchase orders. As of October 1, 2026, Microsoft's 2026 release plans list no agent that decides what to reorder.
Does the Payables Agent create purchase orders?
Microsoft describes it as processing vendor invoices and matching them to open purchase orders and receipts. Creating replenishment orders is not part of its description.
Can Copilot run the requisition worksheet for me?
Microsoft's release plans do not describe that. Calculate Plan and Carry Out Action Message are still actions a user runs in the worksheet.
Where does Microsoft announce new Business Central agents now?
On the AI at Work roadmap. Microsoft says release plans stopped being published in September 2026, while existing plans stay available for reference.
Can I use ChatGPT with Business Central for purchasing?
Yes. ReorderOwl is one way to do it: it reads your Business Central data, recommends what to order and drafts purchase orders that are saved only after you confirm. Book a demo to set it up.
