Which Shopify reports help you decide what to buy?
Last updated
For purchasing, the most useful Shopify reports are Inventory remaining per product (days of stock left), Inventory sold daily by product, Products by sell-through rate, ABC product analysis, and the sales reports by product variant and by vendor. Find them in Shopify admin under Analytics, then Reports, and export any of them to CSV.
Report names and definitions follow the Shopify Help Center as published on 2026-10-01. Shopify says the main Analytics features are available on any Shopify subscription plan; if a report is missing in your admin, check your plan with Shopify.
Where do you find Shopify's inventory reports?
Go to Analytics > Reports in Shopify admin and filter the list by the Inventory category. Sales reports sit in the Sales category on the same page.
Two limits to know: Shopify's inventory report history starts on October 1, 2023, and the sell-through report runs two to three days behind.
Which reports tell you what is running out?
| Report | What it shows | Use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory remaining per product | Days of inventory remaining: ending quantity divided by average units sold per day over the last 28 days | List what runs out before your next delivery |
| Inventory sold daily by product | Average units sold per day for each variant over the period you pick | Get the daily rate for a reorder point |
| Products by sell-through rate | Units sold divided by units sold plus units still in stock | Spot fast movers and slow movers |
| Products by percentage sold | Share of each variant's starting quantity that sold | Check how a new delivery is moving |
| Month-end inventory snapshot | Units in stock at the end of each month | See stock trends and past stockouts |
Start with Inventory remaining per product, sorted by days of inventory remaining. Anything with fewer days left than the supplier's lead time is a candidate to order now. A variant with no sales in the period shows N/A, so slow movers need a separate look.
How does ABC product analysis help with buying?
ABC product analysis grades each variant by its share of revenue over the last 28 days, updated daily. A-grade variants together make up 80% of revenue, B-grade the next 15%, and C-grade the last 5%.
Use it to decide where to spend attention: check A items every week and never let them run out, review B items less often, and order C items carefully in small quantities. Because the window is only 28 days, a seasonal item can jump between grades, so do not drop a product just because it slipped to C this month.
Which sales reports matter for purchasing?
- Total sales by product variant breaks sales down to each variant and SKU, which is the level you buy at.
- Total sales by vendor shows your vendors and the products each one supplies, useful for grouping a buy by supplier.
- Total sales by product gives a quick view by product, excluding shipping.
For a forecast, export sales by variant over a long period. Our Shopify demand forecasting guide shows the formulas.
How do you export a Shopify report?
- Go to Analytics > Reports and open the report.
- Open the horizontal menu and click Export.
- If asked, choose CSV and whether you want the current page or the full report, then click Export.
The file saves to your downloads folder. CSV opens in Excel or Google Sheets.
Is there a quicker way to turn reports into an order?
ReorderOwl does the analysis for you from three CSV files exported from Shopify admin: products, inventory and orders. Today it works in ChatGPT; Claude setup is coming shortly. It returns a reorder workbook for every product and, when you ask, builds the purchase order for you to send to your supplier. Nothing is written to Shopify. See ReorderOwl for Shopify.
