How do you make Odoo reordering rules order in vendor pack sizes?

Last updated

To make Odoo order in whole vendor packs, set the Multiple on the reordering rule. Odoo then rounds the To Order quantity up to the nearest multiple that reaches Max, even if that goes slightly over it. Multiples come from packagings, and only packaging types listed on the product's vendor pricelist can be picked.

This guide follows the Odoo 19.0 documentation as published on 2026-10-01. Some versions label the field "Multiple Quantity".

What does the Multiple field do?

Multiple sets the unit Odoo orders in. If your vendor sells in cases of 6 but you track single units, a Multiple of 6 makes every RFQ line 6, 12, 18 and so on. Choose Units if no pack size applies.

Odoo always rounds up, never down, so the order reaches at least Max. When rounding takes stock above Max, Odoo shows a warning icon about possible excess stock.

How does the rounding work in practice?

Odoo's own example uses a rule with Min 10, Max 40 and a Multiple of 6:

ForecastNeeded to reach MaxTo Order with Multiple 6Result
103030Exactly Max
832364 over Max, warning shown

Set Max with the pack size in mind. A Max that is a multiple of the pack size above Min keeps orders close to the target. A Max just above a pack boundary means regular overshoot.

How do you set a Multiple on a reordering rule?

The Multiple column is hidden by default. To set it:

  1. On the product form, Purchase tab, make sure the vendor pricelist line carries the packaging you buy in. Only packaging types listed there appear as options.
  2. Go to Inventory, then Operations, then Replenishment.
  3. Click the adjust settings icon at the far right of the column titles and tick Multiple.
  4. On the rule's line, pick the packaging in the Multiple column.
  5. Check the To Order quantity and Max together, and adjust Max if it regularly overshoots.

For creating the rule itself, see how to set reorder points in Odoo.

Is the pricelist Quantity the same as a pack size?

No, and mixing them up is a common mistake. The Quantity on a vendor pricelist line is the minimum quantity needed to get that line's price. It is a price break, not an ordering increment.

A pricelist line saying Quantity 100 at a lower price does not make Odoo order in 100s. To buy in packs, use the Multiple on the rule. To reach a price break, set Max high enough, or use Order to Max on the replenishment report when the bigger order is worth it.

What else should you check with pack-size ordering?

Pack sizes interact with Min, Max and lead time. A few checks keep orders sensible:

  • Units of measure. Track stock in the unit you sell, and let the packaging convert to what the vendor ships.
  • Big packs on slow items. If one pack covers months of sales, a tight Min/Max will still order a full pack, and the overstock warning will show often. Accept it or lower Max.
  • Several vendors. Each vendor pricelist line can carry different packagings. If the rule names a Vendor, make sure the Multiple matches that vendor's packs.
  • Lead time. Bigger packs mean fewer orders, so check the vendor lead time on the pricelist line is right. See Odoo lead times explained.

Where does ReorderOwl fit?

Pack sizes are a rule you keep in Odoo. ReorderOwl, a purchasing agent you use in ChatGPT, handles the step before that: deciding what to order and how much from your sales history. It reads sales history, stock on hand, open purchase orders, vendors and lead times from Odoo. It forecasts each item and explains every suggested quantity in an Excel workbook, including overstock value, so packs that cover months of sales stand out.

You draft a purchase order in chat and confirm it, and it is saved in Odoo as a confirmed purchase order, not an RFQ. It counts confirmed purchase orders as incoming stock, but not draft or sent RFQs, so review open RFQs before you confirm. Nothing goes to a vendor until someone on your team sends it. The Odoo connection is built and tested against Odoo test systems, and we connect it to yours with you during setup. See ReorderOwl for Odoo or Odoo reordering rules vs ReorderOwl.

Frequently asked questions

Does Odoo round the order quantity up or down to the multiple?

Up. Odoo rounds To Order up to the nearest multiple that reaches or slightly exceeds Max, and shows a warning when Max is exceeded.

Why can't I pick my pack size in the Multiple column?

Multiples are based on packagings, and only packaging types listed on the product's vendor pricelist appear as options. Add the packaging to the vendor pricelist line first.

Is the vendor pricelist Quantity a minimum order quantity?

It is the minimum quantity needed to get that line's price. It does not make reordering rules order in that increment.

Can I still change the quantity before ordering?

Yes. With a manual rule, click To Order on the replenishment report and change it before clicking Order. With an automatic rule, edit the quantity on the RFQ before confirming it.
