Why aren't Odoo reordering rules creating RFQs?

Last updated

An Odoo reordering rule creates no RFQ for one of a few reasons. The product is not set up for it (not Goods, not tracked, no vendor, no Buy route), the trigger is Manual, the scheduler has not run yet, or the forecast does not fall below Min within the lead-time window. Work through the checks below in order.

This guide follows the Odoo 19.0 documentation as published on 2026-10-01. Earlier versions label some fields differently.

Is the product set up for reordering?

Reordering rules only work on products Odoo tracks and knows how to buy. Open the product (Inventory app, then Products, then Products) and check each of these:

  • Product Type is Goods, and Track Inventory is ticked on the General Information tab.
  • The Purchase app is installed and the Purchase check box under the product name is ticked.
  • The Purchase tab has at least one vendor on the vendor pricelist. Odoo uses the vendor at the top of the list for RFQs unless the rule names a different Vendor.
  • The Buy route is selected on the Inventory tab. If both Buy and Manufacture are selected and the rule has no preferred route, Odoo tries Buy first, then Manufacture.

Is the rule set to Manual?

A Manual rule never creates an RFQ by itself. It only lists the product on the Replenishment report until someone clicks Order.

Show the Trigger column on Inventory, then Operations, then Replenishment (adjust settings icon, tick Trigger), and set it to Auto if you want Odoo to order on its own. Also check whether the rule was snoozed. A snoozed rule is switched off for the period you chose. The Auto vs Manual guide explains both modes.

Has the scheduler run yet?

Auto rules are checked when the scheduler runs, once a day by default, or when a confirmed sales order pushes the forecast below Min. A rule you created this morning may not fire until tomorrow.

To test now, turn on developer mode and use Inventory, then Operations, then Run Scheduler. It also runs your other scheduled actions, so avoid it in the middle of a busy day.

Is the forecast actually below Min in time?

This is the most common surprise. Odoo compares the forecasted quantity on the forecasted date, not today's on-hand quantity, with Min. The forecasted date is today plus the lead times in the replenishment chain, such as vendor lead time and days to purchase.

  • If the forecast drops below Min on or before the forecasted date, Odoo orders now.
  • If it drops below Min after that date, Odoo waits. Sales orders dated after the forecasted date are not in the rule's Forecast yet.
  • Existing incoming quantities can already cover the gap, so the forecast never dips below Min.
  • For Manual rules, horizon days push the window further out so needs appear earlier.

Click the info icon on the rule's line on the Replenishment report. The Replenishment Information window shows the lead times and forecasted date Odoo is using. See Odoo lead times explained for how each one is set.

Is the rule watching the right location?

Each rule has a Location, WH/Stock by default. If your stock or demand sits in a different warehouse or location, the rule's forecast will not see it. Create a rule for each location you replenish.

Why doesn't a 0/0/1 rule fire?

A 0/0/1 rule (Min 0, Max 0, To Order 1) replenishes a product you do not stock each time a sales order needs it. It fires only when a confirmed sales order drops the forecast below 0.

Check that the sales order is confirmed, not still a quotation, and that the rule's Route is Buy. Unlike the Replenish on Order (MTO) route, the RFQ is not linked to the sales order and the stock is not reserved for it, so it can look as if nothing happened.

Can you see why each item was or wasn't ordered?

Odoo shows the inputs but not a written reason per product. ReorderOwl, a purchasing agent you use in ChatGPT, reads sales history, stock on hand, open purchase orders, vendors and lead times from Odoo. It forecasts each item and returns an Excel workbook that explains every line. Items with no lead time are flagged so you can fix them at the source.

The Odoo connection is built and tested against Odoo test systems, and we connect it to yours with you during setup. See ReorderOwl for Odoo.

Frequently asked questions

My stock is below Min. Why no RFQ?

Odoo uses the forecasted quantity, which includes incoming receipts and outgoing demand, not on-hand stock. If incoming orders lift the forecast above Min, no RFQ is created. Also check that the trigger is Auto and the scheduler has run.

Which vendor does Odoo use on the RFQ?

The vendor set on the rule, if any. Otherwise Odoo uses the vendor at the top of the product's vendor pricelist.

How do I force reordering rules to run now?

Enable developer mode, then use Inventory, Operations, Run Scheduler. This also runs other scheduled actions.

Does a 0/0/1 rule link the RFQ to the sales order?

No. The replenishment order is created but not linked to the sales order, and the received stock is not reserved for it. The Replenish on Order (MTO) route does link and reserve.
