How do you set reorder points in Odoo?
Last updated
In Odoo, reorder points are reordering rules: for each product and location you set a Min and a Max, and when forecasted stock falls below the Min, Odoo creates a request for quotation to bring stock back up to the Max. You create them in Inventory, Operations, Replenishment, and choose whether each rule triggers automatically or waits for you.
Which version this covers. These steps follow the Odoo 19.0 documentation. Odoo moves menus and fields between major versions, so if a screen does not match, open the same page for your version on odoo.com.
What do you need before you create a reordering rule?
The product must be stockable and purchasable, with a vendor. On the product form's General Information tab, set Product Type to Goods and tick Track Inventory, or Odoo will not track stock or trigger rules.
For bought items, install the Purchase app, make sure the Purchase checkbox under the product name is on, and add at least one vendor on the Purchase tab. Odoo uses the vendor at the top of that list for the RFQ. Set the vendor lead time as Odoo's Lead times page describes for your version.
How do you create a reordering rule step by step?
Create the rule from the Replenishment screen or from the product. Odoo's documentation gives these steps:
- Open Replenishment. Go to Inventory app, Operations, Replenishment, and click New. You can also use the Reordering Rules smart button on the product form.
- Pick the product and location. Choose the Product and the Location where stock is kept, such as WH/Stock.
- Set Min and Max. Min is the lowest forecasted quantity allowed before the rule triggers. Max is the level the order refills to.
- Show the advanced columns. Click the adjust settings icon at the far right of the column titles to add Trigger, Preferred Route, Vendor and Multiple.
- Choose the trigger. Auto creates the RFQ by itself. Manual lists the product on the Replenishment report for you to order.
- Set a Multiple if the vendor sells in packs. Odoo rounds the order up to that multiple. Only packagings on the product's vendor list appear as options.
- Set lead times. Enter the vendor lead time on the product, as Odoo's Lead times page describes. Optionally set Days to Purchase in Inventory, Configuration, Settings, under Advanced Scheduling, for the days a vendor takes to confirm an RFQ.
When does an automatic rule create an order?
An Auto rule with the Buy route creates an RFQ when the scheduler runs and the forecasted quantity is below the Min. The scheduler runs once a day by default.
New RFQs appear in the Purchase app. To run the rules sooner, turn on developer mode and use Inventory app, Operations, Procurement: Run Scheduler. Odoo uses just-in-time logic: it adds up the lead times to get a forecasted date, and checks stock against that date so orders arrive when needed rather than early.
How do you use the Replenishment report?
The Replenishment report, at Inventory app, Operations, Replenishment, is where manual rules wait for a decision. It shows products that need stock, with forecasts, lead times and a To Order quantity that defaults to refilling to the Max.
- Order creates the order for the To Order quantity, which you can edit first.
- Snooze hides a rule for a set period.
- Order to Max, under the Replenish button, orders up to the Max even when no need is forecast, for example to make one larger shipment worthwhile.
- Horizon days, set from Manual in the left sidebar, makes Odoo look further ahead so needs show up earlier.
- Automatic rules are on this screen too, but hidden by default.
Worked example
Brightline Supply buys work gloves from Ironwell Tools in cases of 12. They sell about 2 pairs a day, and Ironwell's lead time is 7 days, so Brightline sets the Min to cover a week of sales plus a buffer.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Min | 20 | 2 a day for 7 days is 14, plus a buffer of 6 |
| Max | 100 | About seven weeks of sales |
| Multiple | 12 | Ironwell ships full cases |
| Trigger | Auto | Steady seller, no review needed |
When a sales order drops the forecast to 18, the rule triggers. Refilling to 100 needs 82, which is not a multiple of 12, so Odoo rounds up to 84 (seven cases) and creates an RFQ to Ironwell Tools. Stock ends slightly above the Max.
What are the common mistakes?
Most rules that never fire are missing a product setting, a vendor or a lead time.
- Product not tracked. Product Type must be Goods with Track Inventory ticked.
- No vendor on the Purchase tab. With the Buy route, Odoo needs a vendor to create the RFQ.
- Manual trigger, expecting RFQs. Manual rules only list needs on the Replenishment report; someone has to click Order.
- Missing lead times. Without a vendor lead time, the forecasted date is today, and needs can surface too late.
- Multiple not available. The pack must be on the product's vendor list before you can choose it.
- Rules on products in the Master Production Schedule. Odoo's documentation warns this creates inaccurate forecasts and extra orders.
- Min and Max set once and forgotten. They do not move with demand on their own, so review them each season.
Is there a way to skip maintaining Min and Max?
Yes. ReorderOwl, a purchasing agent, forecasts each item from its own sales history when you ask, so by default it does not need Min and Max values kept current. It drafts purchase orders that save in Odoo only after you confirm. See ReorderOwl for Odoo for how it works alongside reordering rules.
Frequently asked questions
Where are reordering rules in Odoo?
In Inventory app, Operations, Replenishment, or from the Reordering Rules smart button on a product form.
Why is my Odoo reordering rule not creating an RFQ?
Check that the trigger is Auto, the product is Goods with Track Inventory on, a vendor is on the Purchase tab, and the forecasted quantity is really below the Min. Auto rules run when the daily scheduler runs.
What does Multiple do in an Odoo reordering rule?
It rounds the order up to a pack size, such as cases of 12, even if that takes stock slightly above the Max.
What is the difference between Auto and Manual triggers?
Auto creates the RFQ by itself. Manual puts the need on the Replenishment report so someone can review it and click Order.
What are horizon days in Odoo?
A look-ahead window on the Replenishment report. Odoo shows needs that will fall below the Min within that many extra days, so you can order earlier.
